What Is Google Tag Manager? GTM Containers Explained

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free container that loads and manages all your marketing and analytics tags from one place — without editing site code each time.

What the GTM-XXXXXX ID is

Each container has an ID like GTM-XXXXXXX. The container snippet loads once (in the <head> and a <noscript> in the body), then fires the tags you’ve configured inside it based on triggers.

Why use it

  • Add/edit/remove tags without a developer
  • One place to audit everything that runs on your site
  • Versioning, preview and rollback
  • Triggers and variables for precise firing

Published vs draft

Only published container changes go live. A tag added but not submitted won’t appear in the live container — which is why Tag Explorer reads the published configuration.

How to check yours is working

Run your site through our free Tag Explorer tool — it shows every tag on the page, nested under its GTM container, with the tracking IDs. To confirm a tag actually fires, use GTM’s Preview mode or your browser’s DevTools Network tab.
